Chandigarh, (IANS) Chandigarh Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the Panjab University Campus Students Union (PUCSU) elections Friday, officials said Thursday.
“To keep an eye on any anti-social elements, our officials will be deployed at various sensitive positions of PU. Police are on vigil all through day and night. We are also raiding boys’ hostels to keep a check on any outsider coming to the university,” said a senior official of Chandigarh police here Thursday evening.
He said all the vehicles coming to the university are being thoroughly checked at the entrance and policemen, in plain clothes, will be stationed inside the campus.
PU elections are Sep 4 and university authorities have made it clear to all candidates that the elections will be carried out strictly following the Supreme Court’s guidelines and the (J.M.) Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendation.
Major groups contesting the elections are Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Indian National Student Organisation (INSO) and National Student Union of India (NSUI).
Elections are also to be held in six other city colleges Friday.
Meanwhile, Chandigarh police registered a case against several students of DAV College in Sector 10 here for creating ruckus in the college Thursday.
“Members of various students’ political groups clashed in the campus over some election dispute. Following this, some miscreants created ruckus in the college premises and damaged the college property. Four students sustained injuries during the melee,” Har Sahai Sharma, investigating officer of the case, told IANS.
“We have registered a case against unknown miscreants and started our investigation,” he added.
Panjab University is one of the oldest universities in India, having been established in 1882 at Lahore. In 1956, it was relocated at Chandigarh.
