17. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given

below: 8

Village Swaraj is that it is complete republic; independent of its

neighbours for its vital wants, and yet dependent for many others

in which dependence is necessary. Thus the first concern of every

village will be to grow its own food crop and cotton for its clothes.

It should have a reserve for its cattle, recreation and play grounds'

for adults and children. Then if there is more land available, it will

grow usually money crops, thus excluding 'ganja', tobacco, opium

and the like. The village will maintain a village theatre, school and

public hall. It will have its own water works ensuring clean supply.

This can be done through controlled wells and tanks. Education will be conducted on a co-operative basis. There will be no castes, such as we have today with their graded untouchability. Nonviolence with its technique of Satyagrah and Non-cooperation will have the sanction of the village community. There will be a compulsory service of village guards who will be selected by rotation from the register maintained by the village. The government of the village will be conducted by the Panchayat of five persons annually elected by the adult villagers. male and female, possessing minimum prescribed qualifications.

18. Make a precis of the following passage in one-third of its length and give the title : 8

Democracy is based on the principle of equal freedom, equal opportunity and equal rights for all. This is possible if people develop the right democratic temper which can be made possible only by mass education. Equal opportunity means that all should have the opportunity to receive education.

Our education should be useful for boys and girls and should build up their character too. In past days education was confined to the people of high or rich class. But it should be open to all. In the distribution of educational opportunity no discrimination should be made between the rich and the poor.

19. Write an essay on any one of the following topics in 250 words : 10

(i) Wonders of Science

(ii) Importance of Games and Sports

(iii) My Favourite Hobby

(iv) An Indian Festival.

20. Write an application to the Collector of your district requesting him

to impose restriction on the use of loud-speakers during exam

days.
