(Reading Skills)                                                                        Marks – 20

A.1. Read the passage and answer the questions :
              The old lady was glad to be back at the flat where she lived. Her shopping had tired her and her basket had grown heavier. In the lift her thoughts were on lunch and a good rest but when she got out she discovered her front door open. She was thinking that she must reprimand her daily maid the next morning for such a monstrous piece of negligence, when she remembered that she had gone shopping after her maid had left and she had turned both the keys in their locks. She walked slowly into the hall and at once noticed that all the room doors were open, yet following her regular practice she had, shut them before going out. Looking into the drawing room, she saw a scene of
confusion over by her writing desk.

        It was as clear as daylight then that burglar had forced an entry in her absence. Her first impulse was to go round all the rooms looking for the thieves, but then she decided that at her age it might be more prudent to have someone with her, so she went to fetch the porter form the basement. The time her legs were beginning to tremble, she sat down and accepted a cup of strong tea, while she telephoned to the police. Then her compound regained, she was ready to set
off the porter’s assistance to search for any intruders who might be still lurking in her flat.

         They went through the rooms, being careful to touch nothing, as they did not want to hinder the police in their search for finger tips. She had lived in the flat for thirty years. Then a police inspector arrived with a constable and she told them of her discovery of the ransacked flat. The inspector began to look for fingerprints, while the constable
checked the front door locks had not been forced, thereby proving that the burglars had either used skeleton keys or entered over the balcony.

          There was no trace of fingerprints, but the inspector found a dirty red bundle that contained jewelry which the old lady said was not hers. So their entry into this flat was apparently not the burglar’s first job that day and they must have been disturbed. The inspector then asked the lady to try to check what was missing by the next day and advised her not to stay alone in the flat for a few nights. The old lady thoughts that she was a fussy creature, but since the porter agreed with him, she rang up her daughter and asked for her help in what she described as a little spot of bother.

A.2. Read the following passage :
          The work of the heart can never be interrupted. The heart’s job is to keep oxygenrich blood flowing through the body. All the body’s cells need a constant supply of oxygen especially those in the brain. The brain cells live only four or five minutes after the oxygen is cut-off and death comes to the entire body.
          The heart is a specialized muscle that serves as a pump. This pump is divided into four chambers. In the lungs, the blood gives up its carbon dioxide and picks up fresh oxygen. Then it is pushed into a big blood vessel called aorta and sent round the body by way of arteries.
        Heart diseases can result from damage to the heart muscle, the valves or the pacemaker, if the muscle is damaged, the heart is unable to pump properly. If the valves are damaged, blood cannot flow normally and easily from one chamber to another.

The miseries of the world cannot be cured by physical help only until man’s nature changes, his physical needs will always arise, and miseries will always be felt, and no amount of physical help will remove them completely. The only solution to this problem is to make mankind pure. Ignorance is the mother of evil and of all the miseries that we see. Let men
have light, let them be pure and spiritually strong and educated ; then alone will misery ease in the world. We may convert every house of the country into a charitable asylum ; we may fill the land with hospitals, but human misery will continue until man’s character changes. We read in the Bhagawad Geeta again and again that we must all work incessantly. We cannot do any work which will not do some good.

      Every work must necessarily be a mixture of good and evil ; yet we are commanded to work incessantly. Evil and good will both have their consequences. Good action will entail upon good effect ; bad action bad. But good and bad both forge fetters for the soul. The solution reached in the Geeta in regard to the cramping influence of work is that if we do
not attach ourselves to it, it will not hold our soul in bondage.
        There is one central idea in the Geeta ; work incessantly, but be not attached to it. To use the simile of a lake for  the mind, no ripple or wave that rises in, dies out entirely, but it leaves a mark, and there is a possibility of that wave coming out again. This mark, with the possibility of the wave reappearing is what is called ‘sanskara’. Every work we do, every movement of the body, every thought that we think, leaves such an impression on the mind-stuff, and even when the impressions are not obvious on the surface, they work in the subconscious region of the brain. What we are is determined every moment by the sum total of these impressions on the mind.
What I am just at the moment is the effect of the sum total of these impressions. If good impressions prevail, the character becomes good ; if bad, it becomes bad. If a man continuously hears bad words, think bad thoughts, does bad acts, his mind will be full of bad impressions ; and they will influence his thought and work, without his being conscious of the fact.

(a) What do you understand by the phrase ‘Subconscious region of the mind’ ?        3
(b) What, according to the author, is the main cause of misery ? How can it be removed ?     3
(c) How can we make our character good ?               2
(d) In the last paragraph of the passage what are the two things that have been compared to with the help of a simile ? 2

11. Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow :
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine :
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I will not look for wine,
The thirst that from the soul doth rise,
Doth ask a drink divine :
But might I of Jove’s nectar’s sup,
I would not change for thine.
I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee,
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be,

But thou thereon did’nt only breathe ;
And sent’st it back to me ;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee !
