P. G. Course Syllabus

 

The two years M.A. Course in German shall be divided into 4 semesters. For M.A. degree in German a student shall be required to complete 8 departmental core courses, 4 departmental major elective courses (specialization) and 4 minor elective courses offered within or outside the department with the permission of the department. Some of the minor elective courses may require some prerequisite for students from other departments.
Each paper shall carry 100 marks out of which 70% marks will be allotted to the examination of the paper at the end of the semester and 30% will be for the internal assessment during the semester in the forms of tutorials, seminars and sessionals.
“Each paper (core/major/minor) shall consist of 5 credits. The complete M.A. course of 16 papers shall accordingly consist of 80 credits”.

I SEMESTER

1) An introduction to the study of literature - I
(Theorie der Literatur)
Systematische Betrachtung der Literatur : Grundbegriffe der Poetik - Literatur – Dichtung- Poetik- Trivialliteratur. Gattungen - Grundhaltungen- Drama Epik - Erzählhaltungen - Erzählsituationen-Erzählperspektiven - Problem der Zeit - Arten der Rede-Direkte Rede, Innerer Monolog- Erlebte Rede Groepik - Epos - Volksbuch -Roman.
Erzählende Dichtung - Dorbietungsformen der erzählenden Dichtung - Gestaltungsformen der erzählenden Dichtung - Dramatische Dichtung – Der Dialog als Träger des Dramas - Das klassische Drama - Das Drama des Realismus - Gestaltungsformen des modernen Dramas • Lyrik - Textaufnahme, Textanalyse und Textverständnis - Formen bildhaften Sprechens – Lyrik als Wirklichkeitsdeutung.

II SEMESTER

1) An introduction to the study of literature - II

A) Methodological approaches to Literary Studies : Strukturalismus, Formalismus, Marxismus, Verfremdungstheorie, Hermeneutik
B) Basic Literary Terms :
Grundbegriffe der Literatur - Akt, Alexandriner, Allegorie, Anapher, Anthologie. Aristotelisches Drama- Ballade - Bewutseinsstrom, Binnenreim, Blankvers, Daktylus, Drama, Drei Einheiten, Elegie, Enjambement, Epigramm, Epik, Episches Theater, Erlebte Rede, Erzählzeit, Freie Rhythmen, Gedankenlyrik, Gelegenheitsdichtung, Hymne, Innerer Monolog, Ironie, Jambus, Kadenz, Kreuzreim, Lied, Lyrik, Metapher, Metrik, Ode, Paaarreim, Poetik, Reim, Strophe, Symbol, Synästhesie, Trochäus, Vergleich, Vers, Versfüe, Volkslied.

III SEMESTER

1) The development of Drama from Lessing to Hebel - I

IV SEMESTER

1)     The development of Drama from Hebel to Brecht
(Die Entwicklung des Dramas von Hebel bis Brecht)
                   -     Gerhard Hauptmann : Vor Sonnenaufgang.
                   -    Bertolt Brecht : Der kaukasische kreidekteis.
2)     Training of oral interpretation skill
Classroom training of oral interpretation of text as given below. The students will be tested for oral viva-voce examination at the end of the Sem.
           A.     Unseen text reading and comprehension (including social, political and literary topics)
           B.     General Conversation (material to be provided by the deptt.)
3)     Essay & Translation                        
(Aufsatz & Übersetzung)    
       -     Essay writing in German 
       -     Translation:         (a) Theory of translation
                                         (b) Translation from English to German and German to English.
Discussions dealing with following topics will be conducted in the class :
       -     The structure of present day German society (the family, the social role of women, youth problems, the workers)
       -     Education and society
       -     Mass communication                           
       -     The consumer society
       -     Environment – Ecology 
       -     Science and man
       -     Cultural history of Germany
