1. Explain with reference to the context any one of the following passage:

(a) The people I saw in India – those in the village as well as those in high office – have both pride and a lively sense of decency and citizenship. They also have a passion for independence. This beautiful child – born in squalor and poverty, uneducated in both grammar and manners – had given me a glimpse of the warm soul of India.

(b) There is a pleasant sense of freedom about being alone in the carriage that is jolting noisily through the night.It is liberty and unrestraint in a very agreeable form. You can do anything you like.

(c) Some kind of dream of unity has occupied the mind of India since the down of civilization. That unity was not conceived as something imposed from outside, a standardization of external or even of beliefs. It was some thing deeper and within its fold the widest tolerance to belief and custom was practiced and every variety acknowledged and even encouraged.

2. Read one of the following passages and answers the questions that follow:

(a) I must have walked the streets till after mid-night. At last I become so exhausted that I could walk no longer. I was tired, I was hungry, I was everything but discouraged. Just about the time when I reached extreme physical exhaustion, I came upon a portion of a street where the board sidewalk was considerably elevated. I waited for a few minutes till I was sure that no passers- by could see me, and then crept under the sidewalk and lay for the night on the ground, with my satchel of clothing for the pillow. Nearly all night I could hear the tramp of feet over my head.
