Paper A
Time: 2 ½ hours Maximum Marks: 75
No. Knowledge/Skills to be tested 1. Reading: 48 marks (a) Seen comprehension 33 marks Questions should be based on the passages and poems from Chinar II.
(i) Ten short answer type comprehension questions based on the prose passages in Chinar II – 15 marks
(ii) Two reference to context type questions based on the prose passages in Chinar II – 10 marks
(iii) Two reference to context type questions based on the poems in Chinar II – 8 marks [Choice to be provided in each of the above.
(b) Unseen comprehension 15 marks (i) One short narrative passage of about 300 words and 6 to 8 questions based on it – 8 marks
(Questions should have a mixture of both factual and inferential comprehension to the proportion of 20:80. There should be a good mixture of different types of comprehension questions: questions, multiple choice questions, true false, yes/no etc.)
(ii) One longer descriptive/expository writing of about 300 words and about 5 to 7 questions based on it – 7 marks
Questions should be more of global comprehension.
2. Vocabulary : 10 marks
Word meaning – 4 marks.
3. Writing & Study skills 17 marks All writing tasks in this paper will be based on the content of the reading passages in Chinar II
(a) Two short paragraph writing tasks summarizing two reading passages 10 marks The length of each paragraph should be about 100-120 words.
(b) One long essay on character study 7 marks The length of the essay should be about 200 words.
[Choice to be provided in both (a) and (b)]
Paper B
Time : 2½ hours Maximum marks : 75
No. Knowledge area/Skill to be tested
1. Grammar: 35 marks Grammar will be tested through contextualized exercises. Learners will be tested for their understanding of grammatical concepts and rules and their ability to apply them in contexts.
Test exercises will cover the following:
(a) Compound and complex sentences 3 marks (b) Tense – the simple present, the simple past, the progressive, the perfect tenses and the future. 4 marks
(c) Use of auxiliary verbs 3 marks
Exercise types should include:
(a) Filling blanks in a given short paragraph.
(b) Completing sentences in a short paragraph choosing appropriate words from those given in brackets.
(c) Completing sentences in a short paragraph appropriately.
(d) Rewriting sentences in a short paragraph by making necessary changes to make the paragraph read better. Rewriting a set of given sentences after correcting mistakes in them. (To test understanding of common errors).
2. Punctuation 5 marks Rewriting a short paragraph given by inserting necessary punctuation marks.
3. Writing & Study Skills 35 marks
(a) One task to rewrite a given paragraph by putting the jumbled sentences in it in the right sequential order. 4 marks

Paper A

Scheme of Assessment 1. One question on explanation with reference to context from the book “The Art of the Essayist”.
The candidate will be required to attempt at least three parts. One reference will be set from each unit. The units are detailed below :—

Unit II : 5 marks (i) Detached Thoughts on Books
(ii) The Ideal House
Unit III : 5 marks (i) Third Thoughts
(ii) The Student and
(iii) Pleasures
2. One general question on easy from the book “The Art of the Essayist”. 15 marks
3. One question from the book ‘Modern Stories’ on theme or character or narration of an incident of a story. 15 marks
4. One question on the novel “The Vicar of the Wakefield” on the description of a character or scence. 15 marks

3. One question on explanation with reference to context from the drama “The Arms and the Men”. The candidate will be required to attempt three. 15 marks
4. One general question on drama “The Arms and the Man” on narration of a scene or character sketch. 15 marks
5. One objective type question consisting of 15 multiple choice items of 01 mark each covering all units and sub units of the prescribed textual section. 15 marks
Paper A
Maximum Marks :75 Time: 2 ½ hours
1. Two questions based on the comprehension of two unseen prose passages, of three questions of 3 marks each and 3 marks on vocabulary test for each question. (9+3+9+3) = 24 Marks
2. One question of four parts of 4 marks each, based on the comprehension from the following chapters of the Literature Reader II :
1. The Turning point.
2. Polar melt down.
3. Forests….Desperate Measures Needed.
4. Taking UP the challenge. 16 marks
3. One question with alternate describing an even or the Moral of the following short stories of the Literature Reader II
1. Some Hill Station Ghosts.
2. The Rightful Inheritors of the Earth.
3. Ha’ Penny.
4. The Devil Outwitted. 10 marks
4. One question based on the theme, summary or central Idea of the following poems of the Literature Reader II
1. Abraham Lincoln’s letter to His Son’s Teacher.
2. The Secret of Machines. 09 marks
5. Two questions of 8 marks each based on the description of an even or a character or a conversation from the following Dramas.
1. Don’t call out or you will be shot ‘ii’
2. The count’s Revenge…. 2×8 = 16 marks
Paper B
Maximum Marks :75 Time: 2 ½ hours
1. One question on ‘Note Making’ or ‘Note Taking’ of a given passage..... 5 marks
