Teaching Excellence The CUHK education aims to nurture students with both specialized knowledge and wisdom for life. It is distinguished by a flexible credit unit system, a college system, bilingualism and multiculturalism. Our general education courses broaden students' interests, widen their perspectives, and develop their ability to face the challenges of contemporary life. Our eight Faculties — Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Science, with the Graduate School, offer over 330 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Research Achievements The University received research funding of over HK$1.36 billion in the 2006-07 academic year from various local and overseas sources. Four research areas led by our staff have been selected as 4 of the only 10 Areas of Excellence funded by the University Grants Committee. Our research centres have close collaboration with Mainland and overseas institutions. Many research products have been put into practical use through technology transfer and spin-off companies. In the 10-year strategic plan adopted in 2006, 5 among our existing areas of excellence were identified as key areas for strategic research investment: Chinese Studies, Biomedical Sciences, Information Sciences, Economics & Finance, Geoinformation and Earth Sciences. The aim is that these areas will achieve world-class impact, bringing enormous benefits to society.
Unique College System CUHK offers Hong Kong's only college experience. Our constituent colleges, Chung Chi, New Asia, United and Shaw, complement the efforts of the University to deliver whole-person education and pastoral care. The college system helps to sustain intimate interaction among teachers and students, thus building strong identification of students and alumni with their affiliated colleges. Five new colleges, Morningside College, S.H. Ho College, C.W. Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College and Lee Woo Sing College recently joined the CUHK family. The new colleges will further enhance diversity and choice on campus.
