The latest QS rankings for universities (2009) place HKU as the best university in the whole of Asia! This ranking is based on peer reputation, employer preferences, number of international staff and students, student exchange numbers, staff-student ratio and research quality. We are also currently ranked as number 26 in the world.
A University for the Best HKU admits the best-qualified students. As in the previous many years, our 2006 new students obtained the highest average HKALE score among students admitted to universities in Hong Kong in the same year, making HKU the top university in Hong Kong. Our admissions standards for Mainland students are better than those of the top universities, and we have more applications than any other institution in Hong Kong. The best Early Admissions Students (those taken in a year early because of outstanding academic results) come to HKU.
Amongst the local universities in Hong Kong, HKU has the best English language admissions scores, the best score in 3 ALs, the best score in 2AL+1AS, the best combined score (UE, CLC, and 3 AL), the most students with average Grade A in English, the most with average Grade A in UE, CLC and 3AL, the most Early Admissions Scheme students placing HKU as their first choice, the largest number of students admitted with 8 to 10 As in HKCEE, the largest number of As achieved by EAS applicants...
At graduation, HKU students achieve the best English language scores amongst UGC funded institutions. HKU Libraries have the largest holdings, HKU spends more on library resources, HKU has the largest annual expenditure, HKU has more exchange students than any other institution in Hong Kong...
Academic Awards Some 1500 scholarships and prizes, amounting to HK$18 million, are available for outstanding undergraduate students. In addition, HKU has a fund of over HK$4 million for providing financial assistance to those in need, in addition to grants and loans of the Government. Our "Young Leaders of Tomorrow" - Community Leaders Scholarship Scheme is for first-year students who are able to demonstrate leadership potential in community service or extra-curricular activities from their secondary school days. Some 450 first-year students have been awarded such scholarships in the past five years.
Starting from the academic year 2006-2007, scholarships will be provided to the outstanding HKALE students admitted to the University under the JUPAS scheme. The value of each scholarship shall range from HK$5,000 to HK$50,000.
World-Class Comprehensive Research University
HKU has won a proud reputation as a world-class comprehensive research university. It offers internationally recognized qualifications and it is renowned for its academic and research excellence worldwide. As an English-medium university in China, HKU also offers researchers unique opportunities to bridge cultures and continents, and to explore more on China-related studies. Both taught and research programmes are offered in a wide range of disciplines. There are ten faculties and around 35 independent units that engage in multi-disciplinary teaching and research.
HKU exhibits a friendly, multicultural environment and supports multiple learning opportunities to enrich students' learning experiences. The University recruits excellent academic staff locally and internationally, and about 45% of academic staff are drawn from overseas, mostly from leading universities in the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, and a number of Asian countries. It also attracts outstanding students from all over the world, with around 10% international students from more than 40 countries.
Fostering a whole-person approach to education, HKU believes that learning about life is just as important for students as academic learning. It particularly encourages contact with the outside world and other cultures through active participation in international exchange and collaborations. It has intensified links and extensive collaborations with more than 400 counterparts in the Mainland and around the globe.
The University offers computing and network services 24-hours around-the-clock and its Libraries deploy a full range of modern library and latest digital technologies to make enormous library collections conveniently accessible online. The Language Centre offers courses in various languages for students to improve their language proficiency and the University Health Service provides primary health care and preventive services as well as subsidized dental service.
Comprehensive sports and recreational facilities are easily accessible, such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, multi-purpose sports centre, track and field, and tennis courts. There are over 110 independent student clubs and societies available for students to mingle and develop their interests. HKU also offers accommodation on- and off-campus, with rooms and flats all being air-conditioned and fully furnished. Banks, restaurants, bookstore and many facilities, like study room, computer room, music room, TV and games room, laundry room, can also be found on-campus.
