California Institute of Technology (CIT)
The California Institute of Technology is a private research university located in Pasadena, California, United States. The Institute maintains a strong emphasis on the natural sciences and engineering, and operates and manages NASA's neighboring Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Caltech is a small school, with only about 2100 students (about 900 undergraduates and 1200 graduate students), but it is ranked number 2 in the world according to Global University Ranking and in the top ten universities worldwide by metrics such as Science Watch, Nobel Prizes, and general university rankings.
The mission of the California Institute of Technology is to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education. We investigate the most challenging, fundamental problems in science and technology in a singularly collegial, interdisciplinary atmosphere, while educating outstanding students to become creative members of society.
Campus
In 1917 Hale hired architect Bertram Goodhue to produce a master plan for the 22 acre (89,000 m²) campus. Goodhue conceived the overall layout of the campus and designed the physics building, Dabney Hall, and several other structures, in which he sought to be consistent with the local climate, the character of the school, and Hale's educational philosophy. Goodhue's designs for Caltech were also influenced by the traditional Spanish mission architecture of Southern California.
Academic Divisions
Caltech is divided into six divisions, each of which offer several degree programs, plus a number of interdisciplinary programs. The six divisions are:
Biology
Chemistry & Chemical Engineering
Engineering & Applied Science
Geological & Planetary Sciences
Humanities & Social Sciences
Physics, Mathematics & Astronomy
Interdisciplinary Programs
Dean of Graduate Studies
Admissions Overview
Admission to Caltech’s graduate programs is granted to a select number of students of superior ability. In general, the admission process takes place once each year for enrollment during the fall. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible and are responsible for ensuring that all admissions credentials are submitted on time. Applications will not be reviewed until all credentials and official copies of test scores have been received.
Some academic options will review an application received after the posted deadline, but such an applicant may be at a disadvantage in the allocation of financial assistance or in the priority for admission. In reviewing your application, the admissions committee of the option to which you have applied may recommend that your application be reviewed by another option as well. If your application is referred to another option you will not be charged any additional fees or be asked to submit a duplicate application.
