Q. 1 If π = 22/7 is approximated as 3.14, find the absolute error, relative error and relative percentage error.      (5marks)

Solution:

Absolute Error

F(x) – f(x*) = π – π*

= 3.14287 - 3.14

= 2.857 x 10-3

The magnitude of this absolute error is quite large when compared with the error of π*.

Relative Error

π is approximated as 3.14, π* = 3.14 and π = 3.14287

|(π – π*)| / |π| = (3.14287 - 3.14) / 3.14

= 9.099 x 10-4

The magnitude of this relative error is quite large when compared with the error of π*.
