Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology (Pantnagar University) is the first agricultural university situated at Pantnagar in the state Uttarakhand of India. It was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on 17 November 1960 as the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University (UPAU). Later the name was changed to Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in 1972 in memory of the great freedom fighter Govind Ballabh Pant. The University lies in the campus-town of Pantnagar in the district of Udham Singh Nagar in the state of Uttarakhand. The university is regarded as the harbinger of Green Revolution in India.
Academic:
The College of Post Graduate Studies started functioning in the year 1963 with Master’s Programmes in 12 departments of Agriculture and Basic Science. The Ph.D. programme commenced in 1965. This is an important college of the University having students for Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes. The faculty of post-graduate courses. The College has grown both in size and stature over the last 44 years. In the sixties 30 Master’s and Ph.D. programmes were offered. Six Master’s and 14 Ph.D. programmes were added in the seventies, 8 Master’s and 4 Ph.D. programs in the eighties and 23 Master’s and 20 Ph.D. programmes in the nineties and 2 Ph.D. programmes in 2004-05. 2 Master’s viz. MBA (for B.Tech. students) and Master of Computer Application (MCA) in 2006-07 and 1 MBA (Food Retail Supply Chain & Entrepreneurship) and 1 Ph.D. programme in Management in 2007-08 were introduced. Now the College offers Master’s degree in 70 and Ph.D. degree in 54 subjects.
Admissions:
All admissions in the University shall be made strictly on merit as determined on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in the Competitive Entrance Examination to be conducted by the University, except the following:
* Admissions to B.Tech. programmes shall be made through an Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE.
* Admissions to Masters’ programme in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology shall be made through the entrance examination conducted by J.N.U., New Delhi.
* Admission to Masters’ programmes in MBA/ MBA (Agribusiness)/MBA (FRSC) shall be made through CAT score, Group Discussion and Interview conducted by the University.
* Admissions to M.Tech. programmes shall be made through GATE examination. The Inter-se-merit of GATE fellowship holders shall be determined based on GATE score. However, admission towards seats for Other State candidates in M.Tech. Agril Engineering majors shall be made through Entrance Examination conducted by ICAR.
* Admission to MCA programme shall be made on the basis of Entrance Test conducted by University Admission Committee.
Library:
The library was established in the year 1960, since then it continues to make progress in its programme to face the challenges of information explosion by adopting information technology. University Library has a highly specialised collection of 3.7 Lakh documents in the field of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, Animal Husbandry, Home Science, Fisheries, Basic Sciences, Humanities, Technology & other allied subjects. The collection includes Books, Theses, Periodicals, Standards, Reprints, Maps, Toposheets, Globes, Microfilms, Microfiches, Records, Tapes & CD-ROMs. The collection grows at an average rate of 4000 Volumes per year.
