Indian Sanitation Innovator Receives Stockholm Water Prize

LONDON: Indian sanitation expert and founder of Sulabh sanitation movement in India, Bindeshwar Pathak has been awarded the prestigious 2009 Stockholm Water prize.

The award akin to a Nobel Prize on environmental issues was presented to him on Thursday night by Prince Carl Philip of Sweden.

"If water is honored by the Prize being named after it, the importance of sanitation, its sibling, cannot be left far behind. The two complement rather than compete with each other," Pathak said in his acceptance speech.

"Provision of sanitation provides dignity and safety, especially to women and reduction of child mortality. As a matter of fact, safe water and sanitation go hand in hand for improvement of community health," he added.

Pathak is known around the world for his wide-ranging work in the sanitation field to improve public health, advance social progress and improve human rights in his home nation and other countries.

His accomplishments span the fields of sanitation technology, social enterprise and healthcare education for millions of people, serving as a model for NGO agencies and public health initiatives around the world.

लंदन। भारत में सुलभ स्वच्छता आंदोलन के संस्थापक बिंदेश्वर पाठक को 2009 के प्रतिष्ठित 'स्टाकहोम वाटर' पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। पर्यावरण मामलों पर नोबेल पुरस्कार के समकक्ष माना जाने वाला यह पुरस्कार पाठक को स्वीडन के प्रिंस कार्ल फिलिप ने प्रदान किया।

पाठक ने इस अवसर पर कहा, 'जब पानी का कोई नाम रख कर उसे पुरस्कृत किया जाता है तो स्वच्छता के महत्व को कैसे दरकिनार किया जा सकता है। दोनों ही एक दूसरे के पूरक हैं।' उन्होंने कहा कि स्वच्छता का प्रावधान गौरव और सुरक्षा विशेषरूप से महिलाओं को सुरक्षा प्रदान करता है। शिशु मृत्युदर घटाता है। सच तो यह है कि सामुदायिक स्वास्थ्य में सुधार के लिए स्वच्छ जल और स्वच्छता जरूरी है।' सामाजिक प्रगति, जन स्वास्थ्य में सुधार के लिए स्वच्छता के क्षेत्र में काम करने वाले पाठक मानवाधिकारों में सुधार की भी वकालत करते हैं।
