IT's 7 new Best employers
Fiscal 2008-09 was certainly not the best for IT companies on HR front. The companies known for their employee-pampering HR policies were suddenly in the news for layoffs, salary cuts and recruitment freeze. The list included who's who of the Indian IT and global MNCs known to be the harbingers of good HR policies in the country.
The companies who spoke from rooftops about their HR policies suddenly went incommunicado on anything remotely HR. So much so that the top IT MNCs (Microsoft, Intel and Sun) and Indian IT's top four companies (Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies, Wipro and HCL Technologies) refused to participate in the annual Dataquest-IDC Best Employers Survey.
The result, survey saw many fresh faces. The emerging companies which despite adversity showed exemplary HR policies during the fiscal. Here's over to these seven new companies in Dataquest-IDC Best Employers Survey list.

R Systems
At the top position in new entrants is R Systems International. Ranked at no. 6 on the over all list, the company is a leading provider of outsourced product development, technical and customer support services.
The company scores high on the retention rate at 87.9% and scores 65.6 marks on the overall employee satisfaction scale. The company won appreciation for employee-friendly policies. Attrition rate at the company stands at 44.2%.
The company, according to the survey, has a well-defined appraisal system. The company has various employee engagement programmes which focus on employee training, mentoring and competency development.
However, according to the survey the company scored low on training initiatives as well as on encouraging new and innovative ideas.
Perot Systems
Next new comer on the list is Perot Systems, an information technology services provider based in Plano, Texas.
Ranked at No 7, on the overall list of 20 Best IT Employers, Perot Systems is the first IT distribution company to have made it to the Best Employers list.
With a strong focus on India, the company increased its headcount to 8000 in the last fiscal, which is about 30 per cent of the company's global headcount. Perot scored 64.5 on employee satisfaction scale.
The company has a holistic employee engagement programme called REACH, which aims to get effective feedback and create an action plan to gain transparency through effective communication.
However, the company's attrition rate at 82.3% is higher than its rate of retention which stands at 72.3%. The company also got low ratings on professional and personal accomplishments and also on exciting growth opportunities.
Ingram Micro India
Next first timer on the list is Ingram Micro, the Indian arm of the world's largest technology distributor.
Ranked at No 11 by DQ Top20 Best Employers survey, the company scores high on overall work environment and the defined employee goal. On the employee satisfaction scale, the company earned a score of 63.9.
However, the company saw an alarming attrition rate of 100% during the fiscal, while the retention rate stood at 66.8%. The company was ranked low on employee stress.
Sify Technologies
The fourth new entrant in DQ Top20 Employers list is India's integrated information communications technology company Sify Technologies. The company ranks at no 13 on the overall list.
Though the fiscal 2008-09 was a tough one for company which recorded flat revenue growth, its HR tried to avoid knee jerk reactions. The company scored high for its transparent appraisal system. On the employee satisfaction scale, the company got a score of 62.2.
The company, however, got poor scores on training and its relevance to work. Attrition rate at the company stood at 80% during the year, more than its retention rate of 75.7%.
Infogain India
Noida-based Infogain, a provider of CRM, ERP, integration and business intelligence solutions & services, is the next new entrant in DQ Top20 Employers list. The company which ranks at no. 17 on the over all list had failed to make it to the second round of survey last year. Incidentally the company also figures among the 15 emerging companies in IT-BPO space.
The company scores fair on non-hierarchical environment, work culture and commitment to employee empowerment. According to the survey, Infogain is among the companies who nurture specialised talent and build cross functional skills. The company got a score of 62 on employee satisfaction scale.
The company saw one of the lowest attrition rates during 2008-09, 26.1%. The retention rate at the company stands at a whopping 93.2%. The company scores low on salary packages and perks offered.
Unisys India
Next company on the list is Indian subsidiary of Unisys India which ranks at no. 18 on the over all list. The company offers expertise in security, data center transformation and outsourcing, end user outsourcing and support services.
In the year 2008, Unisys India saw attrition rate at 71.2% and retention rate at 76.9%. The company figured at 28th spot on the HR ranking and got an employee satisfaction score of 61.3.
Novell
The last new entrant on the DQ Top20 Employers list is Novell. The company not only managed to stay away from even a single lay off, but also paid a huge bonus to its employees in December 2008. The company scored 59.8 on employee satisfaction scale.
Ranked at no 19 on the on the over all list, Novell's retention rate at 87.8% stood way up its attrition rate of 41%.
However, the company did see a six-month delay in salary hikes, appraisals were put on hold and a hiring freeze. The company also scores poor on overseas opportunities and salary and work recognition.
