NEW DELHI: A Delhi government school, which witnessed a stampede in which five girls were killed, did not reopen on Tuesday as announced, with the authorities saying the situation was "not normal" for resuming classes.

Five girls were killed and 34 other students were injured in the stampede in the Khajuri Khas school on Thursday while they were trying to make their way up and down a staircase after being asked to shift classrooms during an examination.

"The school did not reopen today. We will have to take the opinion of police before taking a decision on reopening the school. The situation is not normal," a senior government official said. The date of reopening is yet to be worked out.

The ongoing examinations in the school also have been postponed, the official said.
A number of women, including the mother of a deceased girl, had on Monday protested against the stampede in front of the school and allegedly attacked policemen.

"Tempers have not died down. Let us wait. We have deployed police in abundance in the area," a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, two other schools, operating adjacent to the Government Senior Secondary School where the stampede occurred, reopened on Tuesday. These schools are Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya and Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya.
