Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is situated in Coimbatore in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The College is actually established as Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai and later shifted to Coimbatore and it was later relocated at Coimbatore in 1971. In 1920 it was affiliated to Madras University. The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities.
Today India has 33 State Agricultural Universities, four Deemed Universities and one Central University dealing with various educational programs in Agriculture. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) awarded TNAU the "ICAR Best Institution Award 1998". The University was also adjudged as the "Best performing University" based on the performance of farm graduates at national level competition. Since the inception of TNAU, 11,973 Undergraduates, 4465 Masters students and 1152 Doctoral students obtained their degree from TNAU.
The global technological developments often leads to introduction of new courses in different fields. The introduction of B.Tech. (Food Process Engineering) from the academic year 1998-99, B.Tech.(Agricultural Biotechnology) and B.Tech. (Horticulture) from the academic year 2002-2003 as self supporting program has created avenues for bugetary independence. A new degree program B.Tech. (Energy and Environmental Engineering) was started during 2004. The milestone of growth and development of TNAU indicates its service to the farming community. TNAU library is the oldest in the city functioning since 1910. It has acquired about 160,000 books, monographs, 17,000 text and reference books and 4,500 theses and dissertations. About 380 national and international journals are subscribed with online access for most of the journals.
