The Chevening Scholarship scheme offers exceptional Indian candidates the opportunity to undertake postgraduate study at leading universities in the UK. It is aimed at future leaders, opinion formers and decision-makers.
Annually, the Chevening programme supports around 2000 individuals from across the globe to study in the UK. Up to 100 Indian professionals receive financial assistance for the duration of their studies each year.
The Chevening Scholarship programme seeks to:
* Give outstanding individuals across the world access to the UK’s leading academic institutions.
* Enrich developing countries' resources of skilled professional leaders.
* And ultimately, build ties between the UK and India to work in partnership together on global issues of mutual interest.
We are looking for exceptional Indian graduates with strong leadership potential from all backgrounds, whether public or private sector, or from the NGO field.
Additional Eligibility Criteria: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants for Masters programmes should be able to provide evidence/ information on the status of application to the UK University (s) in a related subject at the time of applying i.e. by 31 December 2008. Candidates who get selected for Chevening awards must submit confirmation of admission offers from their chosen university(s) to the British Council latest by 31 May 2009.
Candidate should ideally have at least 2-3 years of relevant work experience in the selected field of study.
Recent graduates must be able to demonstrate exceptional leadership experience through either academic or extra curricular activities.

About the Programme: 1. These scholarships are available for applicants wishing to study a one year Masters course in the UK. This scheme is not tied to any UK institution.
2. Applicants must identify the course they wish to follow and the UK Institution they wish to attend. It is the responsibility of the applicant to apply directly to the UK Institution(s) of their choice (up to three) for admission before they apply for a Chevening scholarship. You are required to provide evidence/ information on the status of your application to the UK University (s). If you are offered a Chevening Scholarship the offer is subject to a confirmed offer of admission from one of your three chosen UK Institutions by no later than 31 May 2009, failing which the scholarship offer will be withdrawn.
3. You should apply for a masters course that falls broadly within the priority subject areas we have identified. These are:
* Economic Governance, Finance and Public Administration
* Sustainable Development
* Science and Innovation
In exceptional cases we will consider applications for other courses, if the applicant is able to demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and make the case for an alternative course of study.
4. Whichever field you are applying for, we will be looking for evidence that you have what it takes to become a future leader. Chevening Scholarships seek to support studies in areas related to tackling major global issues. We hope that Chevening scholars will return to India to make a difference on these issues.
5. Chevening Open Programme Scholarships cover the following:
(a) Tuition fee
(b) Living expenses for the duration of the scholarship for a maximum period of 12 months
(c) Return airfare from India to UK
(d) UK Student Visa

The Chevening Open Economic Governance, Finance and Public Administration Scholarship offers awards for young Indians who are likely to be the key economic decision-makers, influencers and opinion-formers of tomorrow. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that their chosen course of study and their future career plans will help them to shape the future of India’s political economy.

Sustainable Development is at the heart of the UK’s domestic and international policies. The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a good quality of life without compromising the quality of life for future
generations. Chevening offers scholarships for applicants wishing to study a Masters Degree in one or a combination of the following subjects:
* Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management (including Forestry)
* Environmental Policy and Regulation
* Environment Management Systems and Pollution Control
* Environment Science and Research
* Sustainable Tourism
* Town Planning
* Architecture/Construction (only courses relevant to overall objective of the Sustainable Development Scholarship)

Science and Innovation
The UK is home to some of the most exciting scientific discoveries including the discovery of the structure of DNA and the creation of the World Wide Web. Modern science cannot thrive in isolation, and if science is to progress there must be collaboration between Governments, interchange between international science communities and closer links between science and business globally.
