Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande was an Indian classical musician who wrote the first modern treatise on (North Indian) Hindustani Classical Music, an art which had been propagated earlier for a few centuries mostly through oral traditions.

In 1926, Rai Umanath Bali and his nephew Dr. Rai Rajeshwar Bali, then education minister of United Provinces, established Maris College of Music in Lucknow, Bhatkhande preparing the course material. The college is now renamed Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music. At the request of the State Government, the Government of India by a notification on 24th October,2000 , declared this institute as “University”.

Deemed University as per Section 3 of UGC Act 1956 vide Notification No: F9-17/89-U-3 dated October 24, 2000 of the Government of India

Bhatkhande Music Institute is also much sought after destination for music students from Sri Lanka , Nepal , Central and East Asian Countries. Many of the students from these countries are studying on I.C.C.R. scholarships.

Bhatkhande Music Institute University offers following courses:

1. School Section

(i). Praveshika     
       Duration: 2 years     
       Eligibility: Class Vth or its equivalent examination pass with elementary knowledge of concerned subject.

(ii). Parichaya
       Duration: 2 years     
       Eligibility: Praveshika of BMI or its equivalent examination recognized by BMI in concerned subject, pass.

2. College Section

(i). Prabuddh
      Duration: 2 years     
      Eligibility: Parichay of BMI orits equivalent examination recognized by BMI in concerned subject pass and High School of U.P. Board or its equivalent examination pass, or High school of U.P. Board or its equivalent examination with concerned subject, pass.

(ii). Parangat
       Duration: 2 years     
       Eligibility: Prabuddha of BMI or its equivalent examination recognized by BMI in concerned subject pass and Intermediate of U.P. Board or its equivalent examination pass, or Intermediate of U.P. Board or its equivalent examination with concerned subject, pass.

3. University Section

(i). Diploma in Music
      Duration: 2 years      
      Eligibility: High School of U.P. Board pass with concerned subject of music. OR High School of U.P Board or its equivalent examination pass with Praveshika of BMI or its equivalents examination pass recognized by BMI in concerned subject of music.

(ii). Bachelor of Performing Arts (B.P.A)
       Duration: 3 years     
       Eligibility: Intermediate of U.P. Board pass with concerned subject of music. OR Diploma of BMI in concerned subject of music, pass. OR Intermediate of U.P. Board or its equivalent examination pass with parichay of BMI or its equivalent examination recognized by BMI in concerned subject of music, pass.

(iii). Master of Performing Arts (M.P.A)
        Duration: 2 years
        Eligibility: B.Mus/B.P.A. Degree of BMI in concerned subject or its equivalent examination from any university, pass. OR Graduation in any subject from any university with Prabuddha of BMI or its equivalent examination recognized by BMI in concerned subject of music, pass.

(iv). Ph.D.
        Duration: 2 years Min.
        Eligibility: M.Mus/M.P.A. Degree of BMI in concerned subject or its equivalent examination from any university pass with minimum 55% marks. OR Post Graduation in any subject from any recognized university pass with minimum 55% marks with parangat of BMI or its equivalent examination recognized by BMI. OR A renowned artist with post graduation in music, and who have contribution in the field of music through the publication of research papers or cassettes/CDs, provided that the Research committee is satisfied with his work.
