National Institute of Technology, Agartala was founded as Tripura Engineering College in 1965, affiliated with Calcutta University and upgraded to NIT in 2006. The College was started with courses in three traditional branches of engineering, namely Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. After the establishment of Tripura University, the college was affiliated to it. After the enactment of the NIT Act the institute has become an "Institute of National Importance" and will shift to a new campus presently under construction.

The campus of the Institute is spread over an area of 335 acres, set amidst a sprawling landscape of natural quietness. The institute has 3 boy's hostels & 1 girl's hostel & one another hostel for the fresher's only. Currently hostel facility is available to the students from outside the the state only. A huge construction is going on around the hostel Campus to make hostel compulsary to all the students.

Further, with the conceptualization of NIT’s, the college renamed as National Institute of Technology and given the Deemed University status by Ministry of Human Resource Development - Government of India.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, Tripura is 20 Km far from Agartala city, 4 km off from National Highway – 44. The domestic airport at Agartala receives flights from Kolkata and Guwahati International airports. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is close to Agartala. Flights from Dhaka also come to different Indian International Airports. The Kumarghat railway station is nearest railway station, 140 Km from Agartala. The railway station is linked to Guwahati. Several trains like: B.G. Express, Cachar Express and Barak Valley Express service this station. The National Highway 44 connects Agartala through road. The city is 599 km from Guwahati, 487 km from shillong and 317 km from silchar.

Academics:

The Institute offers seven UG courses and one PG courses will be introduced in Civil Engineering Department in the academic session 2007-2008. The Institute offers BE degree under Tripura University, however the Institute will be autonomous under NIT act which is already passed by the parliament. The Institute recently introduced a new curriculum in the line of IITs where more number of elective subjects offered to make the system flexible. The Institute followed the mark based system of evaluation, but provisions have been kept for switching over to credit based system. Industrial training, under taking projects is a part of the education system and students are also encouraged to take various activities for social development through NSS and NCC.
