National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela is situated at Rourkela in the state of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime MInister Of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. National Institute of Technology (NIT) formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was ranked as the second best NIT in India by TEQIP for the year 2009.
The main objective of the institute is to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. The institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. Government of India have recognised the institute as a premier institution of repute and have developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies i.e. the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-U.K. REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.

i. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme-: This programme consists of 8 semesters and is of four years duration. Following are the various disciplines in which the Bachelors degree is awarded:

ii. Master of Technology(M.Tech) Research: The minimum duration of this programme is 2 years and maximum duration is 5 years.
iii. Masters of Science (M.Sc): This programme of the institute is of 2 years duration and is consists of following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics
iv. Masters of Computer Application (MCA) : The programme is divided into six semesters.
3. Doctorate of Philosophy : PH.D is offered in all the departments
Admission:
Under Graduate Programs: Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech): The admission to this programme of the institute is done through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).
Post Graduate Programs :
i. Master of Science (M.Sc): For pursuing M.Sc from the institute a student need to have a B.Sc. degree with the subject applied for as one of the subjects (pass or Honours). Plus, Mathematics in +2 level or + 3 level is compulsory. A student has to also appear for an entrance test. The Candidates appearing in the B.Sc. final Examination can also apply for the above the programme but they are required to submit their mark sheet at the time of Entrance Examination.
ii. Masters in Engineering(M.E): For gaining admission in the M.E programme of the institute a candidate need to have a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree in the relevant discipline with not less than 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in the qualifying examination. There is no relaxation in academic requirement for any category / caste of candidates. The students who are appearing in the B.E. / B.Tech (final semester) examination may also apply for the above course. But they have to produce their mark sheet showing 60% marks in aggregate before 30th September of the applying year.
iii. M.Tech (Research) : To take admission in M.Tech (Research) programme of NIT, Rourkela, the aspirants should have a Bachelor’s degree either in Engineering, Technology or Medicine. A Masters Degree holder in Science including Mathematics and Statistics or Humanities/Social Sciences is also eligible to apply. Besides, a student with a degree equivalent to any of above from recognized University with at least 60% marks secured in it or 6.5 CGPA in the case of Engineering/ Science subjects and 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA in the case of Humanities/ Social Sciences/ Medicine subject, then a students can apply for this programme.
iv. Master of Computer Applications (MCA) : Admission to the MCA programme of the institute is done through NIT MCA common entrance test. A candidate needs to have a Bachelors degree in any discipline with atleast 60 percent marks. Mathematics as one of the subjects at either 10+2 level or +3 level is must. Those who are appearing in the final examinations of their bachelor’s degree can also apply for theprogramme.
v. Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D) : A student can enrol for the PH.D programme of the institute if he/she is B.E. / B.Tech. / M.Sc/ in relevant discipline with minimum 65% marks in aggregate or 7.0CGPA. The M.E./M.Tech.holders can also pursue PH.D programme of the institute if their aggregate in relevant discipline is atleast 60 percent. The institute provides no relaxation to SC/ST/Handicapped students for this programme.
